Vertical Farm and Waste to Energy Plant in Seoul

The purpose of this urban vertical farm and botanic gardens concept competition was to explore and set a high standard of urban and contemporary high-rise agricultural design possibility in Seoul. In addition to maximizing the production of local food, the proposed concept makes substantial environmental, economic and social impact by introducing energy and clean water production from the communal waste, and providing the public with educational and commercial functions.

The community related public activities such as local green market, education centre and restaurant are allocated on the street level, together with the water- and energy plant entry levels, and they form a concrete based plinth for the building.

On top of the public plinth level are located the private agricultural facilities in narrow blade-shape structures, constructed of light and reusable steel trusses. The plinth level communicates with the lower urban context in the east, where as the high-rise blade takes reference to the city towers in the west.

Solar radiation analysis was carried out, in order to find the most effective massing form and orientation for the plant growth. Mobile hydroponic and aeroponic cultivation methods were introduced in order to save water and nutrients, to take the most effective use of the solar radiation, and to keep the total building weight as light as possible. Following these principles, the proposal produces yields equivalent to 1,5 km2 of traditional farmland.

The public can observe the farming processes along a public route in the high-rise part of the proposal, which takes the visitors through a set of botanic gardens. The same time views across the city landscape can be enjoyed. Each garden represents the flora of one continent, and together this garden composition creates a living showroom that public can enjoy when walking by the restored Cheonggye Stream next to the site.
